Those silly pro-High Fructose Corn Syrup commercials are back

It's annoying that HFCS is everywhere.

I mean Jesus, it's fucking everywhere!

And sometimes, just sometimes, you can't avoid it.

Damn it!

Actually, I just thought about what I ate today and I haven't had any! :D

which is why I find the claim that HFCS is really poison to be a bit silly. If it was, everyone in America would be dead (or obese, or whatever other cause you ascribe to it) by now, because it's in just about every single processed food that there is.

I'm not saying its good for you, but I think more research is needed on it.

I think this quote from that link is particularly relevant.

He says not because it is worse than sugar, but because it shows up in all sorts of places that sugar never did.

HFCS was designed to be a sugar substitute, however the reason many people appear to get fat from it may just be that they are consuming so much of it since it's been used in a lot of other foods than sugar traditionally was. So it's not dissimilar to what would happen if someone dramatically increased their sugar intake.

As we know sugar is not "poison" and is fine in moderation but can be unhealthy when you eat too much of it.

At what point did Americans become good at "moderation" of anything?

I'm talking about facts here, I wasn't presupposing that a certain behavioral outcome had to be considered. Everyone has a choice for what they eat.

I don't eat a lot of sugar or soda and I'm pretty slim.

Certainly not in our lifetimes...

I just saw a special on the news last night. A 12 year-old girl weighed four -hundred and forty pounds when they first took her to the doctor. !

Now fourteen, she looks closer to forty. Those parents should be strung up by their idiot necks.

Metta, I'm not sure corn syrup/high fructose corn syrup are exactly the same thing.

I was going to speedwatch that, and ended up viewing almost all of it (fast forwarded over some of the biochem which was too technical for me.)

One of the more interesting parts of the video was how Lustig treats sucrose and hfcs as equally bad...sugar is simply snipped apart by the body into its two components, glucose and fructose.

Go to YouTube and search for JESSICA 400 POUNDS - a 7-year old girl who weighs 400+ pounds and is so obese, she's forced to get around by rolling on the floor because her legs can't support her.

Why aren't her parents in jail for child abuse???

Statements like these truly upset me. Vaccination has saved millions upon millions of lives, and almost totally eradicated several globally-destructive diseases. It's so easy for us, in our rich and comfortable modern lives, to forget that, not so long ago, families used to have ten kids because five of them would usually die before they were adults, from flu, measles, chicken pox, small pox, polio, etc etc.

The modern anti-vaccination movement isn't just harmful to those who don't get vaccinated. Non-vaccination allows diseases to re-propagate, spread and continue. When you refuse vaccination, you endanger your entire community.
Bravo! Couldn't have said it better myself. The anti-vaccination nuts are truly a danger to society.

I think everyone gets to worried about this stuff. I mean like she said it's fine in moderation. That's the key moderation. Hell if all you do is eat cabbage your not gonna be too healthy.

The thing is, if you don't carefully scrutinize the ingredients in every food purchase you make , you'll be getting overdosed with this H.F.C.S.-It's in everything, bread ,ketchup, soda, salad dressing, barbeque sauce, yogurt, ice cream..

I have a hardon for this shit, and while at the supermarket,I'll pick up items I have no intention on buying just to read the ingredients, and as I said, this stuff is way too many products.

Last weekend,I was looking for some barbeque sauce.Out of about 7 or 8 different brands on display, every single one of them had this crap in it.

I'm sure some of it still slips by me here and there, but my rule of thumb is if it has it in it,it goes back on the shelf.

Ah, but moderation on HFCS doesn't exist if you consume many items on the supermarket shelves these days. If you make yourself a sandwich, it's in the bread. If you have a soda with your sandwich, it's in the soda. If you have a small dessert...well, you get the picture.
Exactly...

Regarding HFCS in breads, that's one food product that shouldn't be much cause for concern. The sugars that are included in most breads aren't there for sweetening purposes; they're there to feed the yeast. Most of the sugar is consumed by the yeast during the fermentation process, and very little remains in the finished product.

I think they use it in baked good because it gives the product a ''golden'' color. How much of it survives the baking process ,I don't know..

I just avoid any bread that has it in it.At least with bread, the customer has many options to avoid consuming it..

That MSG ^report^ is scary, you really have to know the company and their suppliers before spending one's money. Disregard the government's advice, they're protecting big business, fast food, and corn farmers.

If only people could also get this upset about the ingredients in their lube, like parabens, propylene glycol, EDTA, mineral oil, etc!

Spit...its natures lube..or organic coconut oil.

The amount of extreme radicalism in this thread is giving me a headache. I mean, some of you people are f@#king nuts.

High Fructose Corn Syrup is NOT sweet poison. Yes, it's worse for you than sugar, and yes, it increases risk of obesity, diabetes, etc. However, a soda every few days along with some fruit snacks is not going to turn you into the blob, nor are you going to die if you drink a few cokes in one day.

Honestly, if it were THAT bad, we'd all be dead. HFCS is cheap and tasty, although quite unhealthy. That doesn't make it poison any more than a cheesburger or a milkshake is "poison."

^ Pics please.

And let me just repeat.

If it is plant, it is good to eat.

If it is made in a plant, it is not good to eat.
