President Elect's telephone call to President of Taiwan

Shouldn't the thread read "Trump accepts a call from the President of Taiwan"?
They called him, I believe, didn't they?

It does not work that way.
They already arranged what time should they talk to one another as leaders are busy.

He does want to build a hotel in Taiwan lol----
China called him stupid and inexperienced so we should be nuking them by Jan 30.

This has already been demonstrated...his team was in Taiwan earlier this year.

The posted article is ambiguous, but it appeared that Trump made the call. Unfortunately, the linked report in the article requires subscription, so I can't read the original story.

They kind of bury that part of the story:

http://time.com/4589641/donald-trump-china-taiwan-call/

Trump’s call indicates that the President-elect is willing to shake up the status quo while also that he values America’s existing friendships. A Trump spokesman was quoted saying the President-elect was “well aware of what U.S. policy has been” on the Taiwan issue. And Trump seemed to indicate as such with a later tweet, which said: “Interesting how the U.S. sells Taiwan billions of dollars of military equipment but I should not accept a congratulatory call.”

Again....the real issue seems to be about his ego again....it is clear that he hasn't thought through the potentially negative consequences this would have for Americans doing business with the PRC....

And, of course, Trump just can't resist making a bad situation worse.

While his fart catchers were all over the place trying to clean up the mess over his call from Taiwan, he is busy adding fuel to the flames with twitter.

Jesus Christ.

This is not the way the President of the Untied States should be dealing with complex international issues.

You can't fight a twitter war with countries the way you do with Rosie O'Donnell.

He looks more and more like a reckless and dangerous buffoon.

Yeah. Pence is actually looking more presidential than Trump.

^As a private American citizen Donald Trump can speak with whomever he wishes without having to kow tow to Beijing's dictator.

After assuming office as POTUS, Donald Trump's actions will be make interesting reading.

They choose their leaders often is not a "dictator".
It is just a different system, merit based system ?

Providing the candidates meet the criteria that selects those loyal to the party, there is no reason to believe that the candidates will provide the Chinese people with choices that they can vote on.

Tiananmen Square public dissent in favour of democratic governance is visibly disencouraged by China's ruling elite, with crushing consequences for those advocating selection of the government of China by the Chinese people, not by a privileged tiny elite.

Taiwan's government is elected by the will of its people evidencing that democracy works well on the island of Taiwan.

What you have said here has been my biggest frustration with my country's policy with China. We go around the world invading small countries to bring freedom and democracy and then suck up to Red China.

On reflection the United States plays it safe with China, and other totalitarian countries such as Saudi Arabia, for close trading relationships combined with an awareness that mutual distrust is harmful to the peace of the planet, can influence the growth of better relationships between nations.

Taiwan, and the United States are close military allies, with both countries prospering from a mutually beneficial trading relationship.

What is your policy for China then ?

We play it safe as in ignoring human rights violations, while at the same time we have embargoes in place against smaller nations.
Consistency would be a good policy. If we pinch our nose and trade with China then do it with all. If we will not trade with some countries because of how they rule their people we should look closely at China and others.

The USA sends troops in to lands and screams liberty while being in bed with oppressive regimes.

If by "they" you mean the people, then no, they don't choose their leaders EVER.

The merit-based approach has its advantages, but Beijing's is not primarily a merit-based system but a loyalty-based system: if you're not loyal to the guy at the top, you're not going to advance unless everyone else is totally incompetent.

They mean the politicians.
Actually the politicians should choose their leader and NOT the people because most people don't have a clue who they are and have not met them in person before.

There, updated it for you.

How did the Taiwan lady got Trump's private number ??
The call was planned long ago and Trump knew about the Taiwan/china issue as he has a lot of business deals with china and Taiwan.
